Hiking Trails

Trails are generally marked with spray-painted footprints, cairns, and sometimes rows of rocks on the side of the path (especially where there are confusing cow’s paths around).
Durations refer to hiking time at average pace without breaks.

We’re trying our best to maintain those trails and improve signage, but there’s only so much we can do. If you find that a certain section is confusing, if you manage to ascertain where the path actually is, please don’t hesitate to contribute by moving a few stones, building a cairn or pulling out a couple tufts of grass as needed. Thank you!

Stone Circles Loop — Easy — 3.5km / 1h (Yellow footprints)

This easy 3.5km loop is a staple. Starting from the visitors’ parking area, go around the pond behind the swimming pool, then sharp left at the pecan orchard. After you’ve gone through the little gate, and going right at the first fork to go counter-clockwise, it will first take you past a few of the beautiful and mysterious Stone Circles we have in this area. They’re much easier to spot and “observe” from July to October when the grass is low, but if you take the time to look around you’ll see that some are small and simple, and others are much bigger, clustered and/or concentric. You’ll also see some stone alleys and terracing-type walls. After 1.5km or so (20min at a normal pace), turn left at the fork to go toward the edge of the escarpment. There you will get sweeping views of the valley below. You’ll also see more Stone Circles on the opposite hillside. The trail follows this cliff for almost 1 km toward the Rock Fairies River waterfall, and then veers left again to follow the river back up toward Tegwaan. At some point you’ll see a sign toward “Waterfall and Restaurant crag” to the right. This is a nice spot to take a break and cool off in the pool below. (but no, there is no restaurant there!)

Be very careful on the escarpment section, especially during/after rain as these rocks get very slippery when wet!

NEW!!! Tegwaan to Rock Fairies waterfall — Moderate — 8.6 km / 3h

Start as for the Stone Circles Loop. Go right at the first fork (100m from the gate), then after the first straight section (between the Stone Circles) keep going straight/right at the second fork to reach the “Valley of the Giant Aloes”. After about 500m there is a 3rd split; go straight/left this time. This will take you on and across a small plateau. There is not much dirt here so pay attention to the cairns (stone piles) to follow the trail, first to the left edge and then to the end of that plateau, before it takes you down into the valley. When you reach the Rock Fairies river at the bottom, boulder-hop to cross the water and you should find another trail on the other side. Go left (upstream) to go to the waterfall. This trail crosses the river a few times so keep your eyes open and backtrack a little bit if you think you got stuck on the wrong side of the river.
WARNING: some scrambling and boulder-hopping required, and watch your step on the steep sections!

Tegwaan to Rocky Drift Nature Reserve — Moderate — one way: 3.4 km / 1h30

Start as for the Stone Circles Loop, but after the first straight section (between the Stone Circles) keep going straight to reach the “Valley of the Giant Aloes”. At the next fork, go right for a short uphill to the Big Cairn Saddle, then all the way down through the forest. Be warned: this part is short but can be quite strenuous, both downhill (knees!) and/or uphill (breath!).

When you meet the Rocky Drift main trail, turn left to go to their restaurant, or turn right to keep on hiking.

Note that there is a R100 day pass fee to access Rocky Drift property. For Tegwaan overnight guests only, this fee includes a R50 voucher for the bar/restaurant.

Rock Fairies River Walk — Easy

To the top of iMemeza — Moderate

Some steep parts and not much shade on this trail, so preferably go early morning or choose an overcast day, and/or make sure to bring hat, sunscreen, lots of water and a snack (and of course a warmie and a rain jacket as the weather is always susceptible to change quite quickly).

There is no clear trail for this one. Either just go with the flow and follow whichever cows’ trail suits your fancy, keeping in the general direction of the top, or follow the mountain bike trail all the way to the top (and then turn right to reach the panorama viewpoint), or a combination of the two.
The start of the MTB trail is just outside the Tegwaan gate, so walk to the main road, turn right towards town, and 100m farther on the left side, before the bridge, you’ll see a little sign for the mountain bike trail.
